The involvement of the Southside Animal Hospital in The Taking of Henry: When the caregiver refused to return Henry I immediately contacted my vet, College Mall Animal Clinic, Bloomington Animal Care and Control and 24Petwatch and reported Henry as stolen. I was assured by both my vet and 24Petwatch that NO ONE would be able to secure either his vet records nor transfer his microchip number. I was also reassured by 24Petwatch that if anyone contacted them they would immediately contact me. This was done on June 2, 2014. On June 19th, 2014 at approximately 3:30 pm I received a telephone call from 24Petwatch and was told that a Dr. Darcie Evans of Southside Animal Hospital, located at 5220 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46227 had contacted them to inquire as to the requirements they had for transfer of a microchip. The representative said that Dr. Evans relayed to her the microchip registered to Henry. The representative told me that she informed Dr. Evans that Henry was reported as stolen and that she was given my contact information as is procedure for them to do with any clinic, vet office or shelter. They do not release this information to the public. The representative did say that Dr. Evans did not actually ask TO transfer the chip but asked WHAT documents were necessary to facilitate the transfer of the ownership. The representative told me that she told Dr. Evans that either a she needed to submit a signed form that was provided by 24Petwatch in which I, the owner, would have had to sign Henrys ownership over, or a surrender form as is provided by many shelters and rescues. She was also told that often vet records could be considered. I immediately asked to speak to a manager and was connected to a woman at 24Petwatch named Sandra. She identified herself as the manager. I informed her that under absolutely NO circumstances were they to transfer Henrys registration. I informed her that Dr. Evans was the sister of the woman who had taken Henry and refused to return him to me. She expressed surprise because at no time did the previous representative indicate that Dr. Evans presented herself as any one BUT a licensed Vet who treated Henry. After this telephone conversation I immediately telephoned Dr. Evans office and was denied permission to speak to her. I then wrote letters to both Dr. Holder and Dr. Jones, who are owners of the practice. Dr. Evans is merely their employee. I left telephone messages for both owners as well. NONE of my calls were ever returned nor did I ever receive a reply to my letters. The only conversation I would ever have with anyone from that office was with a office staff member who identified herself as Michelle Canary Deppe, and who shared with me alleged conversation that Dr. Evans had ALLEGEDLY told the entire staff, this is per Ms; Canary Deppe. I will not go into that conversation but suffice it to say that this woman accused me of being a criminal, a homeless vagrant who lived out of a shelter among a host of other lies. The major accusation was that I had allegedly been abusive to Henry and that was the basis with which this woman declared that I did not deserve my dog. There should be no need for me to even speak this but let me swear to anyone and everyone, I NEVER EVER did anything to harm my dog, I was NEVER abusive. ENOUGH SAID! I then filed suit against Dr. Evans. My mistake was not naming the business as well along with filing in small claims court. Perhaps had I gone to circuit court they would had taken me more serious. The next filing will tell that, wont it?! I did subpoena the vet records. I received two pages of records, one with notes that allegedly were written by Dr. Darcie Evans which state the sisters name and address, and Henrys basic information (name, date of birth, his breed and color along with his weight) Interestingly is also his microchip number. The written records indicate that on 5/1/14 a heartworm exam was performed and there is a simple check by that. it is also indicated that he was given a 3 yr Dap 3 yr Parvo 1 yr Lepto and 1 yr Bordetella. There is the word fecal written as well but no indication of any other details. Furthermore there is 5 lines of writing that is barely decipherable. What little I can make out indicates that there was an alleged mat behind one ear and waxy debris in his ears. She noted flea dirt and fleas and there is an arrow and the words use trifexis/advantage One should note that Henry is a 4+ year old male at the time of the visit with Dr. Evans and yet she does not note any indication of an attempt to retrieve records from any previous vet. Dr. Evans not only vaccinated my dog but she prescribed trifexis for which he previously had shown signs of a lack of tolerance for this drug. Dr. Evans had no way of knowing that because she did not have Henrys previous records. What she did have though was his rabies certificate. His rabies certificate with my name and address and phone number along with the rabies tag number the vaccinated date (2/10/2012) and the expiration date (2/9/2015) AND most importantly the name and address of Henrys vet and his microchip number. ALL IN MY NAME. There was no transfer paperwork, there was no signed bill of sale, there was no indication that Henry belonged to her sister. NONE! There are more notes on the ledger. An entry marked 5/2/14 with the words Re Issue (either PU or RU #404) An entry marked 5/12/14 with mostly illegible printing but referring to shave down and skin is very inflamed..... An entry marked 5/14/14 with the words phoned script 500 mg cephalexin 3x2x21 #126 and then an illegible printed sentence. The second page of the records provided by Southside Animal Hospital is an invoice. It includes $92.00 worth of charges and $63.00 worth of discount and shows an ending balance of $29.00. There was no charge for the exam listed on 5/2/14 and there is absolutely NO reference on the invoice to any services allegedly provided on 5/1/14 and there is no invoice for any of the services referred to on the office notes with entry dates of 5/12 or 5/14. I have a great number of thoughts on the services provided by Dr. Darcie Evans as well as the fact that she was presented with a dog by her sister who possessed paperwork in the name of another individual who was not a family member or a marital partner, in fact there is absolutely no connection to her sister and I that would or should have given Dr. Evans any reassurance that her sister had a right to bring Henry to her for any treatment. One question I have is WHY did Dr. Evans NOT scan Henry? Initially I focused on that aspect and would hold that had she scanned him she would have contacted 24Petwatch and they would have alerted me to this. I would have known something was amiss, why would my caregiver take my dog to a vet other than my own? I had left the rabies certificate with the caregiver because in our county if your dog is at large and picked up by Animal Control they will not release the dog without the actual certificate. I had specifically discussed with the caregiver this in detail and left her one copy and retained one copy. I did not want my dog to have to spend the night at the shelter, despite having worked there and knowing the staff. Shelters shock dogs that are not normally held in open pens with large numbers of dogs. In addition, is it common practice for a skilled vet to treat a 4+ year old dog for whom she has no history or records on? Why didnt Dr. Evans attempt to contact College Mall Vet? It is a small world we live in. Dr. Evans was born and raised in Bloomington Indiana. I am not much of a betting person but I would venture to lay money on the possibility that Dr. Evans knows at least ONE of the practicing vets at College Mall. The founding vets have been with that practice for years, years and years. They are well respected and well known. I have been a client of that practice for a number of years. I first took Rex there back in 2003. They saw all of my foster dogs and saved the life of one of my fosters who had ingested raisins and was suffering from kidney failure. They have assured me that had Dr. Evans called them for the records they would have contacted me because I had not signed to release any records. This would have been another alert early on that something was amiss. As for the record keeping, I will leave that for you to judge. I intend to file suit against Southside Animal Hospital and Dr. Darcie Evans. I intend to allege that she was negligent in her treatment of Henry, that she not only put him at risk for reaction to the trifexis but that she created a paper trail that enabled him to be sold. I also intend to tell everyone of my experience with this practice. They have a Facebook page. On that page is a photo of Dr. Evans holding a small pup by the name of Asia. The label on the photo informs the viewer of just how important it is to have a dog microchipped. The photo is dated February 6, 2014. Dr. Evans had experience with microchipping and its results a full 3 months prior to seeing Henry. Asia was a lost dog reunited with her owner. IF only Henry had been so lucky!!
