The irony, however, is that many people are already reaping benefits from the work of our scientists without them knowing. Take for example the case of Ramon Barba, a horticulturist who was recently proclaimed a National Scientist along with renowned biologist Angel Alcala. The countrys owes Barba big time for developing mangoes as a major cash crop after he found a way in the early 70s to make the once seasonal tree produce fruit all-year round. If in case you have ever wondered why local mangoes are always available at the market, you have Barba to thank for. #respect
