The issues of mining now days are becoming so crucial in Malawi, its surprising that mostly commentators on these issues are not geo-scientist who has the full understanding and scientific knowledge of commenting on such issues for the good of Malawi, its normal when it comes to POLITICS you hear a political scientist from Chancellor College consulted for comments, but when it comes to MINING issues every one is a geoscientist sometimes even a medical doctor or a lawyer, an engineer are the first to comment and most the comments are not relevant hence misleading. Its time Malawians should consult Malawian Geoscientist who can help and give a professional view and advises on Mining Industry related issues, there some critical areas which need a better understanding and scientific explanation such as exploration, mining, cooperate social responsibility, community development, Environmental Impact Assessments, Royalties and Taxes etc. it’s possible for mutual benefit but there is a need for us to put a good environment and proper legislative framework. Its time Malawians should learn to balance the negative and positive impact matrix with significance levels of Mining projects; the country has abundant mineral resources that can be sustainably exploited to contribute to the government’s vision of transforming the country from a predominantly importing and consuming nation into one that is predominantly producing and exporting.
