The joy in the performance by the John Funkhouser trio was also in their faces as they played! There was delicious freedom in the creativity that moved them throughout each piece, yet, there was always great discipline and technique. The compositions were truly complex but also inviting as they drew us into each phase, and as the rhythms shifted with rapidity they still seemed to flow seamlessly because these three musicians not only hear one another they feel one another and move together beautifully in and around the music. Each of these players is individually most skilled and talented and as a whole they are that something more that makes them another entity entirely--and that was who we met and thoroughly enjoyed tonight!
