The joys of travel. While I love to go the "getting there" seems - TopicsExpress

The joys of travel. While I love to go the "getting there" seems to be more difficult all the time or, perhaps I have become less tolerant of the inconveniences of modern travel. To be fair, I always travel internationally with miles so, the price is right. This is the story of my flight home from Buenos Aires this week. My flight left at 5AM so, my ride to the airport arrived at 2AM. Neither was a good beginning. When I was waiting to check in for flight. Mike, my friend who was staying with me, appeared. He had left for the airport at 5:30 PM for a 9:21PM flight which was canceled. My flight had a 5 hour layover in Panama. His flew directly to Houston. I tried to get on his flight but, United would not allow it. He told me his plane was half empty. When I got to Houston, there was close to a 1000 people waiting to go through immigration. In response to the demand the U.S. Immigration closed half of their booths, a great management technique. By the time I got through immigration and customs I missed my flight to Denver. United booked me on the next flight, which was canceled 15 minutes later. It was the last flight to Denver. United put me up in a hotel and gave me meal vouchers for $10 each, just enough to buy a bottle of water for dinner and breakfast. They sent me to catch a shuttle to the hotel which never came. I called the hotel. They directed me to the airport tram/subway. It took 3 minutes to get to the hotel after I had waited 45 for the non-existent shuttle. When I checked in, I asked them how far the hotel was from where United had me wait for the shuttle, I was told 1500 feet. When I got home, 37 hours after I left the apartment, I had a serious upper respiratory ailment and "pink eye". You get what you pay for. Thank you United Airlines for another memorable travel experience.
