The keeping of the Sabbath is one of the ten commandments - an institution given by God to society, and yet as soon as it got in the way of love, Jesus said change it - because "we are not made for the Sabbath but the Sabbath is made for us." (Mark 2:27) Marriage is a God-given institution in my understanding as a Bishop in the CofE, but if the way we do it is not helping to affirm the love between people of the same gender, I believe we should find ways to do what Jesus did and change it. Surely marriage is not a more "God-given" institution than was the Sabbath of the ten commandments? Yours, Bishop Laurie Green.
