The key to understanding Krugman’s feuds is that he is driven by a professional elitism that can cut in two directions....[His] first incarnation positioned him as a snobbish defender of the economic elite, and his more recent incarnation, as a populist critic. But they both reflect a very particular kind of veneration for credentialed economic expertise....Silver represents the kind of autodidactism that Krugman rose to fame decrying. His war against Silver is merely the return to an old hate. The line I usually hear against Krugman from my friends on the right is that hes a Keynesian hack, a once-decent economist who sold his soul for the sake of ranting against Bush and the Tea Party. As someone who remembers well way back when Krugman Slates in-house moderate liberal, writing the Dismal Science column, I have to say: this line makes FAR more sense.
