The king of Polyrhythmic Rock, Frank Zappa once said something along the lines of I love the sound of polyrhythms, without a constant pulse they would seem random and silly, but I love the feel of strange things against a constant beat. ... a loose quote. In the many years I played Frank Zappas music here in Australia, in Europe and with some of his band veterans, it became a habit to splash the hi-hats at the required tempo. With various qualities of PA which gravitated between bad and shithouse, the only way the boys in the band could hear the pulse when they delved into outer space with an extreme polyrhythm such as 19:16 etc (Zappas Big Swifty 1971 et al ..) was me splashing hats so they could hear where ONE was .... today ... it is a common habit ... its something I so often comment on in clinics etc ...
