The last few days have been quite interesting. I had an old friend Dwyane that I havent seen in 22 years drive up to visit me. It was a very nice surprise indeed. Ive also had all kinds of people stopping dropping off water which is lucky as I need it. Today is mostly a people post... The heat and the smoke from the Hudsons Hope fire has made hiking tough. Ive had to slow down as the weight of the pack is hard on my left foot which has been aching and swollen as of late. I made it to Pink Mountain where I took a day off. Luckily for me I met a group of musicians who are off to Dawson City who played a few sets the other night between conversations. Pink Mountain is actually a Provincial Park nearby. Im getting mixed info as to why its named Pink Mountain. One source says its due to the reddish rock its made of that looks especially pink at sunrise and sunset the other source suggests its because of the Fireweed that blankets the hill. Either way its agreed that its aptly named. The park’s primary role is to protect a significant palaeontological site containing examples of large marine fossils from the Mesozoic Era, including the largest ichthyosaur ever discovered. Its also home to a rare Arctic Butterfly and it is also the only place in the province where wild plains bison roam. The 1000 plus bison found roaming the area are not naturally occurring, but rather descendants of an escaped herd of 50 from those imported by local guide and outfitter R. Lynn Ross in 1968. Who knew Pink Mountain was so cool. I left Pink Mountain yesterday bumping into Ryohei Oguchi who is cycling all over the World. Its a two year journey from what I can gather and hes well on his way cycling to South America now having begun in Alaska. I arrive at Sasquatch Crossing which like many other places along here is a camp catering to mostly oil & gas workers as well as a store and bistro. Im offered a free place to stay in the camp with a chance to do laundry and have a shower complete with a few meals and I take it. I havent done laundry in over a week and Ill tell ya I forgot how awesome clean cloths feel. The food was excellent at the Mag & Mels Bistro as well and the staff were great. (THANK YOU!) Well Im off again but feeling rather blah. I dont know what the matter with me but I struggle to stay motivated. Im guessing it part dehydration as water is hard to find and I cant carry enough for this heat. I cant wait to get back into the mountains...
