The last few sentences in my research proposal. As various narratives compete and are being woven to produce a sense of historical continuity, i.e. the thousands-year old Confucian teaching dated back to imperial dynasties, the Marxist-Leninist ideology residue of a project immersing the nation in Socialism, and new Western individualist, capitalist ideas flooded in by the unstoppable force of globalization, Vietnamese people are caught amidst this messy mixture and left to their own device to figure out how they should live their lives. Focusing on migrant domestic workers as one of many groups going through the same confusion, this study hopes to add yet another answer to this puzzle: how do poor rural women, having broken certain norms by moving away from home, and possessing little means (e.g. capacity, time, energy) to contemplate their own circumstance, redefine and reaffirm their gender identity despite many contradictory messages dictating what kind of women they should be?
