The last news release from last night the 11th Beaver Fire News Release August 11, 2014, at approximately 5:30 p.m., a burnover occurred on the Beaver Fire near Klamath River, California. Three firefighters were trapped as a rapid wind shift overtook them. All three firefighters deployed their fire shelters. At the time of deployment, they were in a predetermined Safety Zone. The firefighters were evaluated on scene. No serious injuries have been reported at this time. All firefighters were actively withdrawing from the fire as a thunderstorm approached. All personnel are currently safe and accounted for. The thunderstorm east of the Beaver Fire produced 30-35 mph outflow winds that changed direction rapidly and caused extreme fire behavior. With the increase in wind speed, flame lengths extended into the canopy of the trees, causing a sustained crown run which aligned with the exposed west slope on Buckhorn Ridge. Fuels are at critically low moisture conditions and extremely receptive to fire due to the exceptional drought. Residents of Highway 96 between Doggett Creek to Horse Creek, in the Horse Creek area, and on the 12 Road (Middle Creek Road) were issued a mandatory evacuation notice today as the fire activity became extreme. Highway 96 is currently open to one way traffic through the fire area, and residents should use alternate routes to avoid the area. An evacuation shelter at the South Valley Junior High School at 237 Butte Street in Fort Jones, California is now open for those who have been displaced. Media information for the Beaver Fire is available at (530) 496-1516, and information will be released as it is verified.
