The late Bob Menning of Pella. Bob was a WWII bomber pilot whose plane was shot down by the Germans. He wound up as a prisoner of war at Zagan, in Silesia, known as Stalag Luft III, and becoming somewhat famous for it was the subject of the 1963 film, The Great Escape. He told, years later, of he and his fellows meeting German captors in the Stalag, the Americans holding up their right hands and exclaiming Heil Hitler. A short distance later, they would add, In case we lose.
