The late Jerry Falwell was in error. Our Founders, most of the foremost of them, were emphatic in their intention to establish a SECULAR Republic. That may have been one reason they chose Philadelphia, the first city with complete freedom of religion. Voltaire loved the concept. Sure, we had colonies that had state religions (Massachusetts, for example) and of course the Anglican Virginians. But the First Amendment makes it clear, our laws are to be SECULAR. We have separation of church and state. The only way in which we might be called Christian is a more heritage thing, a social or tribal or family thing. You can of course point to Western Civilization, that ancestrally, yes, many of us have roots going back to Old Europe, and so forth. In that sense, sure. But OFFICIALLY, we are secular. The Founders met in Philadelphia and gave us a godless constitution.
