The latest from Culpepers Congressman Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Richmond, from a press conference today: “First, I know many Americans are dealing with fear and destruction from the tragedy of the tornadoes this week. I know all of us express our sympathy to the families who have lost loves ones in this terrible natural disaster. This week is also a week where we remember those who lost their lives in the Holocaust. Yesterday, was Yom Hashoah and I know tomorrow there will be a remembrance ceremony in the Capitol and so we keep those memories also in mind. “Recently, I was at Germanna Community College in my district and I was talking with those who lost their jobs. They happened to be meeting with the Virginia Employment Commission trying to find out not only how they were going to sustain themselves in a period of unemployment, but how they were going to get themselves back to work. Several of these individuals are chronically unemployed and the community college system in our state, as in many others, is trying to gear up to provide the kind of skills necessary so that we can see more people leave the rolls of the chronically unemployed and get back to work. These are the kinds of things that we’re trying to work on in the House. I know many of you and others are saying it’s an election year so we’re not going to be able to get anything done. “The House remains focused on trying to help those who are unemployed, on trying to help those that are trying to see a better future, and to remove the obstacles that stand in the way because of the overly burdensome hand of government in many instances. We’re going to stay focused, the House is going to continue to work. We’ve got stacks of bills that are sitting in the Senate that refuses to act. Jobs bills trying to affect a better health care future, bills trying to affect lower energy costs for working middle class families in our country. “This week we’re going to stay focused, we’re going to help veterans. We’ve got the Mil/Con Veterans appropriations bill on the floor. This is the earliest our Appropriations Committee has started this process and produced bills since 1974. So we’re going to continue to work and hopefully the Senate will respond. We also this month are going to take up, as Congresswoman Ellmers discussed, this issue of charter schools. Chairman John Kline, as well as Ranking Member George Miller have a bipartisan bill that we’re going to bring forward next week on National Charter Schools Week to allow for the replication and expansion of charter schools across this country, and to help families realize their kids’ future by allowing a quality education for more folks in this country. “We’re also going to work to pass the Research and Development Tax Credit. This is about jobs. We’re going to stay focused on creating jobs and helping people see an America that works, and one that works for more people.”
