The latest from National Canine Research Council: Since pit bull - TopicsExpress

The latest from National Canine Research Council: Since pit bull is not a breed or even a recognized designation for a group of breeds, it comes as no surprise that a new study found that animal shelter workers in the US and UK did not agree on which dogs they considered to be “pit bulls” or even which actual breeds they thought should be assigned this label. Multiple studies have demonstrated that animal professionals typically do not agree with one anothers breed labeling of dogs of unknown ancestry nor with DNA analysis. This new survey reveals such attempts to be simply peoples opinions, with no factual foundation, but these opinions often carry severe consequences for an individual dog. The authors rightly conclude that their results “bring into question the validity of determining breed identify based on appearance,” and “highlight some issues regarding the practical utility of BSL.” Read more on the study on the NCRC blog: Incoherent definitions confound attempts to label dogs as “pit bulls”: nationalcanineresearchcouncil/blog/incoherent-definitions-confound-attempts-to-label-dogs-as-pit-bulls/
