The leader of Harakat al Shabaab al Mujahideen, Ahmed Abdi Godane, did not die in an air strike on 1 September, an intelligence source has told Africa Confidential. The Pentagon announced on 2 September that United States Special Forces, acting on actionable intelligence, tried to kill the Al Shabaab leader using manned and unmanned aircraft to launch Hellfire missiles and laser-guided bombs. The target was a camp and vehicles near Barawe, in south-central Somalia. The US is still looking for proof that Godane is dead but has expressed strong confidence he is. africa-confidential/article/id/5759
