The leadership of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) calls upon the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to move with speed and allay fears being expressed by some members of the public that the Joyce Banda administration is orchestrating plans to rig the May 20th tripartite elections. This follows revelations of a Nigerian Plane registration number ZS CAG which offloaded seven boxes suspected to have contained pre-marked ballot papers. According to reports in the local media, the aircraft landed at the Chileka International Airport in the early hours of Saturday morning and a minibus is said to have carried the boxes to Sanjika Palace in Blantyre Speaking to Capital FM, MCP spokesperson Party Jessie Kabwila accused the institution of failing to properly clear the air on incidences related to rigging. She cited an earlier example, where MEC was working with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission with regard to the same polls as something that is continuing to plant fears in people’s minds as to whether the forthcoming polls would be free and fair. MEC officials could not be immediately reached for comment as they were in a meeting with traditional leaders over the polls.
