The left has one mulligan to use when it comes to the failures of socialism: Europe. It is fascinating to see that liberty was defined here and developed as a sound theory against European concepts but now the left turns its eyes back to Europe. For long they have used Europe as a model for a successful mixed economy and placed against the American system. However, the proposition fails. When we examine the economies of many of the countries the left calls socialist what we see isthat their economies are more free than the American economy. In a number of relevant factors they are capitalist economies. In many respects we are the socialists! What is it then about them that attracts the left? The European welfare state. Yet, as European states implode it is precisely due to their welfare states! Thatcher was right after all; these societies appear to function until they run out of other peoples money. So, the left is left out with nothing worth imitating. Why the left still succeeds electorally? The main reason is precisely the lure of the Welfare Stare.
