The legendary producer and engineer Eddie Kramer will be a special guests in the WPWK studio in the Klipsch booth at CES 2015. Colleen Murphy of Classic Album Sundays will be the WPWK host and has put together a special Eddie Kramer-inspired Spotify playlist. Below is what she has to say about the playlist. The word ‘legendary’ is no exaggeration. Eddie has worked with some of rock and pop’s finest including The Kinks, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones and Carlos Santana. He also engineered two hit singles for The Beatles’ ‘Magical Mystery Tour’: ‘All You Need is Love’ and ‘Baby You’re a Rich Man’ (and in case you’re wondering why these records are not on our playlist it is because The Beatles’ catalog is still unavailable on Spotify). However, it was heavy duty rock n’roll where Eddie truly made a name for himself, especially with three significant relationships: Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and Kiss. He met Hendrix at Olympic Studios in London where the two began a creative collaboration that lasted until the end of Jimi’s short life. He moved over to New York City to help oversee the creation of the legendary studio, Electric Lady, and his work with Hendrix so impressed Page and crew that his skills were enlisted by Led Zeppelin for their second album through to ‘Physical Graffiti’. Eddie had played a part in many a psychedelic and prog tune, but the middle break of our playlist’s opening tune, ‘Whole Lotta Love’, is a triumph of studio wizardry. I’m sure this blew the eardrums of Gene Simmons and crew and they subsequently brought Eddie in to produce four of their albums including their hit album ‘Rock and Roll Over’. Eddie sure has some captivating stories to tell (and some great photographs which will be in his forthcoming book).
