The long debated Sampras vs Federer 1st Major Sampras 1990 - Seeded No. 12, became the youngest U.S. Open champion at 19. In the process beats T.Muster, I.Lendl (at his peak) in five, J.McEnroe and Agassi in the finals. All players playing their best. What a road to victory in his first Major. 1st Major Federer 2003 - Wins Wimbledon, beats Roddick in semis and Philippoussis in finals. Philippoussis was almost retiring. 2nd Major Sampras 1993 Wimbledon - Beats Agassi in 5, Becker in 3 and Courier in 4. Again Becker was at his prime and so was courier world number number ONE. Sampras becomes world number ONE after this Major. Stays Number ONE till 1998 for 6 years. 1993 - 1998. Goes on to beat Becker, Courier, Lendl, Kafelnikov, Henman, Ivanisevic, and Agassi again n again till 1998. 1998 - 2002 - beats Agassi, Rafter, Roddick, Rusedski, and Haas. Final Major - 2002 - U.S Open - people said he was done. People said he couldnt win another Grand Slam title. Before our very eyes, Pete went and wrote an unbelievable story at this US Open. He Hit rock bottom and then overcame long odds to win the most improbable title of his magnificent career. He defeated longtime rival Agassi with vintage serve-and-volley tennis. 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Retires * Federer - 2004 - 3 Majors, beats Safin, Roddick and Hewitt. Most in straight sets. Becomes World Number one. 2005 - 2 Majors - beats Roddick and Agassi (going to retire). 2006 - 3 Majors - beats Roddick, Nadal and Baghdatis. 2007 - 2010 - beats González, Roddick, Söderling, Djokovic, Murray, del Potro, and Berdych. Honestly, this period no one believed they could beat Federrer other than Nadal. No one was even close to his level of play. Federer stays World number ONE till 2007 and then again in 2009. Thats a total of 5 years. However 2010 - till date - Djokovic beats Fed at 2010 U.S open SF. Things change players start believing they can beat Federer. 2011 - He wins 0 Majors. Read that again ZERO Majors. Loses to Djokovic, Tsonga, Nadal. Manages to win 1 Major (Wimbledon) in 2012 beating Murray and since then NO MAJORS YET TILL DATE. Summary - Sampras won 7 Wimbledon titles in 8 years. Federer won the same 7 Wimbledon titles in 10 years. Sampras beat some amazing and tough players in his journey to number one and in his career. Federer had no one in his league till 2010 and once they started beating him, he just cant win back. Sampras was in no situation like this, getting thrashed by the players he once dominated. RIVALRY - Sampras vs Agassi - Sampras leads Agassi 20 -14 in All matches. 6 - 3 in grand slam matches and 9 - 7 in finals matches. Federer Vs Nadal - Nadal leads Federer with a thrashing score of 23 -10 in All matches, Clay courts 13–2, Hard courts 9–6, Outdoor 8–2. The only surface where federer leads is indoor 4 -1 and grass 2 -1. Thats just sad.
