The loss of a man I was so proud to call a mentor and friend. From early civic oriented functions, to law school, to our Kentucky roots, military/Naval enthusiasm, naturalization hearings and .. Heck,.. the man taught me all about the subtlety of loop-holes, dad-gummit.. and Ive been paranoid and cynical as all get out ever since! Love ya, George! :) :) :) Stoel Rives founding partner George Rives dies - - George D. Rives, a founding partner of Portlands largest law firm, Stoel Rives LLP,died Oct. 23. He was 99. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 22 at First United Methodist Church of Portland, 1838 S.W. Jefferson st. Rives was born in Kentucky in 1915. He graduated from Kentucky Wesleyan College in 1935 and earned his law degree from Yale Law School in 1938. Following graduation, he worked in the Washington, D.C. office of John R. Turney, specializing in the Interstate Commerce Act and the new Motor Carrier Act. He served as a naval officer in the Pacific command during World War II. Following the war, he joined Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison, a San Francisco firm. He became a partner in 1952. Pacific Power asked him to join its outside legal counsel, Smith, Gray & Rodgers, following his handling of several rate cases in the late 1950s. At the time, Pacific Power was the firms primary client. When Smithand Gray retired, the firm became Rives and Rogers and employed eight attorneys. To find attorneys, he recruited from leading law school sand recruited local attorneys who had expertise he felt the firm required. Herbert M. Schwab joined the firm in 1966 after serving as a Multnomah County circuit judge and a justice pro tem for the Oregon Supreme Court. That led to a new name for the firm, Rives & Schwab, one of many that would come in the subsequent years. The Sept. 30, 1979 merger of Davies Biggsand Rives Bonyhadi & Smith resulted in the firm Stoel Rives. George Rives succeededTom Stoel as managing partner when the former retired in 1981. Rives retired in 1984.
