The management of African Newspapers of Nigeria PLC, publishers of Nigerian Tribune, had apologized to Mr. Umana Okon Umana, former SSG, Akwa Ibom state and the immediate past National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, over a news story the paper carried in its cover of Thursday January 16, 2015. In the story, the Nigerian Tribune had insinuated that the real reason for the gang up against the former chairman was because he had a close relationship with Umana. They further alleged that Umana had purchased a bullet-proof jeep for Turkur. Umana, however, while reacting to the story challenged the Tribune to show evidence of such car gift or retract the story and apologise. In release signed by Mr. Iboro Otongaran, media Adviser to Mr. Umana, the paper was asked to show proof of this allegation, and was challenged to bring such proof into the public domain The statement went on to threaten that If the Tribune fails to show proof of its allegation, Mr. Umana Okon Umana reserves the right to all legal steps to protect his good name from reckless and malicious attacks by Nigerian Tribune, adding for a measure that, Umana has already briefed his lawyer to write to the Nigerian Tribune, demanding proof of their allegation of the story with an apology within 48 hours, in the absence of such proof. The Ibadan-based paper in its retraction wrote, We carried a report in the Thursday, Janiary 16, 2014 edition, in which we implied that Mr. Umana Okon Umana, former Secretary to Akwa Ibom state Government, gave out a bullet-proof car as gift to erstwhile chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur. We have since found out that the report was factually incorrect. We therefore, retract the report in its entirety. Mr. Umana and Alhaji Tukur are highly respected Nigerians who we hold in high esteem. We regret any embarrassment the report might have caused them.
