The many Portuguese families in Swaziland gave a certain exotic - TopicsExpress

The many Portuguese families in Swaziland gave a certain exotic continental flavour to the country. They had their own sports clubs in Manzini and Mbabane and many good restaurants. Being English Portugals oldest ally we were always made welcome. They taught me how to drink katembe (50% red wine and 50% coke) and braai sardines but I never got used to their smelly bacalhau (dried cod). My best friend and workmate was Leo Ferreira (ex- Rhodesia) and we used to drink at SeKunderes Club behind the British High Commission. I used to watch the Portuguese guys playing cards and try and figure out how to play. The winner seemed to be the one who could shout the loudest and bang the cards down hardest.
