The mass shooting in Isla Vista has led to the predictable blame - TopicsExpress

The mass shooting in Isla Vista has led to the predictable blame game - a lack of meaningful gun regulation, poor mental health institutions, and others that accompany any tragedy like this. But it would be deeply wrong to ignore the message that Elliot Rodger stated so clearly in his manifesto and YouTube explanation. Rodger is the extreme end of a large group of men who believe that women are humiliating them, that feminism is bent on stealing their liberty, and that the gender privilege they have is justified. The support for his ideology, or the hesitancy of the media to label it a factor, cannot be dismissed. Boys are being brought up in a way where aggression and violence against women is not condemned. Often having power over females is part of ‘being a man’- and these habits early in life lead to dating violence and domestic abuse. Writing for CNN, Kevin Powell describes the problem in depth: cnn/2014/05/26/opinion/powell-manhood-rodgers-shooting/
