The matriarch loves shopping and treating family and friends to her homemade cakes, fried dumplings and celebrated potato salad. She was born on March 21, 1914 on the island of Antigua in the Caribbean. After attending an all-girls public school in St. John’s, Crawford worked at the elite Mill Reef Club and the U.S. Army Base as a laundry maid. Brooklyn resident Mona Wyre Manigo, a member of the New York-based Antigua and Barbuda Progressive Society, vividly recalls Crawford, her continual quest for knowledge and information — and her kindness. “I kind of grew up with them; my teenage life was with them,” said Manigo, who lived in a rural part of Antigua, but attended school far away in the city. During weekdays, Manigo lived with Crawford and her family, whose home was walking distance from the school.
