The media shouted on newscasts this week one juror’s contention that “George Zimmerman got away with murder” after the juror appeared on ABC News. But it turns out that the interview appears to be severely edited for one purpose: to continue the liberal narrative that justice was denied. Zimmerman just can’t seem to catch a break. There are reports that he helped rescue a family from an overturned van on a busy Florida interstate, but the media ignored it. The same week, Maddy, known as Juror B29, came forward and said Zimmerman got away with murder, and the media shouted it from the mountaintop. The only problem is, according to Slare, she didn’t mean it the way it sounded Maddy was the only non-white juror on the Zimmerman case, and as Slate reported: She’s been framed as the woman who was bullied out of voting to convict Zimmerman. But that’s not true. She stands by the verdict. She yielded to the evidence and the law, not to bullying. She thinks Zimmerman was morally culpable but not legally guilty. And she wants us to distinguish between this trial and larger questions of race and justice. According to Slate, the Robin Roberts’ interview with Maddy that was shown on “World News Tonight,” “Nightline” and “Good Morning America” was edited for time constraints. But this video was “cut and spliced” in such a way “that Maddy has been manipulated and misrepresented,” Slate reported. Juror B29 has repeatedly been depicted as unhesitatingly saying, “George Zimmerman got away with murder. But you can’t get away from God.” The words in the first sentence weren’t Maddy’s own. Roberts used the words in a question, and the juror repeated them. Slate’s William Saletan observed: You have to watch her, not just read her words, to pick up her meaning. As she struggles to answer, she looks as though she’s trying to reconcile the sentiment that’s been quoted to her—that Zimmerman “got away with murder”—with her own perspective. So she repeats the quote and adds words of her own, to convey what she thinks: that there’s a justice higher than the law, which Zimmerman will have to face. She thinks he’s morally culpable, not legally guilty. Although that was the most egregious example of ABC News manipulation to suit its own ends, it was by no means the only one. Not only does Juror B29 stand by the verdict, she also said the case should never have been brought to trial, saying, “I felt like this was a publicity stunt.” She added that the jury wasn’t racially divided, it didn’t focus on race in its deliberations, and — here’s the biggie — any racial or ethnic pressure that occurred was directed against Zimmerman, not Trayvon Martin. The juror also emphatically said she was in no way bullied or manipulated in the jury room, telling Roberts, “My voice was heard. I was the loudest.” But these aren’t the things we’ve heard from the mainstream media. No matter how many families Zimmerman rescues from overturned vehicles, babies from burning buildings or cats from trees, he’ll forever be known as the man who “got away with murder.”
