The meeting tonight was a talk and slide show about 250 Years of Harewood House and the Lascelles Family by Sue Sharpe. The Lascelles first came to England with William the Conquerer and settled in North Allerton. It was Henry Lascelles who made their fortune when he moved to Barbados as a Banker, Slave Trader and Plantation Owner. After returning to England he and his son Edwin bought land including Harewood House. They began living at Harewood in 1771. The house was modernised in Victorian times and later given up as one of the 9 Treasure Houses in England.
