The mighty and the masses. By Bassey Okon Samuel. "Sign the death warrants": was the order from the president. The gap between the masses and the mighty in the society not only put the masses at the will and control of the mighty class but also at their disposal. Nigeria can be described as a society where the developments are always at the cost of the masses and not the populace. Most recently, going through the newspapers, i could read sentiments by the main class in the social strata of the nigerian community in reflex to the order of the president that all state governors should sign death warrants for the capital crime of convicted criminals. Listening to my stereo set today i listened to the opinion of various callers from their home on the subject point. let us consider an example, which of a politician child would involve himself or herself in armed robbery of any form in other to convict them of the capital crime? maybe if you were to be sincere with yourself you would realize and also give the same answer that i have to give. The truth is that in every decree in a battered society like Nigeria, the masses are always targeted. Maybe in the pursuit of justice, if the federal government had decreed that capital punishment should be the penalty for corruption in public offices , then all would be at rest that equality was at ,least a bench mark. Maybe if i was to come to a conclusion what i would imply is that the judicial system should be re-organizes to give the maximum output for the benefit of all, both those of a high strata and those of the middle class or lower class.
