The more in touch you are with deeper levels of mental activity from the surface where we experience things directly, the less of an effect those experiences appear to have on you. To the outside world they may see the surface level of grosser consciousness and conclude that the experiences are strong enough to affect the entirety of the person, but knowing the more subtle layers of the self shows the experiencer otherwise. For the individual who has penetrated more subtle levels of consciousness and become more aware of them on a regular basis, the surface experiences wont do much to fight the current of the deeper mental activity. If it is flowing in a positive direction, the negative experiences will brush off like nothing; however if the deeper currents are moving in a negative direction, even positive experiences will unfortunately be insufficient to have much of a lasting effect. The only way to reliably change the direction of the current in a short time is to penetrate the recesses of the mind even deeper. Closer to the solid foundation of consciousness there lies more power and potential to change the currents of the rest of the mind, all the way up to the surfaces perception of experience.
