The most admired companies in America are highly focused. They are almost all involved is a single industry. (They stick to their knitting!) They are led by passionate leaders who eat, sleep and breathe their business. These leaders quickly turn ideas into action because they are able to give sufficient time to implementation and can concentrate their energy on aligning all relevant stakeholders. Generally speaking, South African management, on the other hand, have spread themselves very thinly over a wide range of responsibilities. In an open economy, they are extremely vulnerable to competition from focused professionals. In American, the slogan is: Ready – Aim – Fire Whereas in South Africa, the slogan is: Ready – Aim – Aim – Have another workshop – Aim…………………….. In other words, we have plenty of good ideas but we don’t get things done! Cheers, Graham.
