The most commonly used sectioning device in the microstructural analysis laboratory is the abrasive cutter. Selecting the correct wheel for a specific application, including abrasive type, size, bond strength and overall wheel thickness is essential to achieving a good cut. In addition, abrasive sectioning should be performed wet, with ample flow of coolant that includes both corrosion protection and lubrication. Proper technique will minimize surface damage and provide adequate cutting rates. There are many different abrasive cutters, accessories and consumables available.
