“The most disrespected person in America is the black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the black women. The most neglected person in America is the black woman.”- Malcolm X I don’t know what it feels like to be a black woman in a white world; in Nigeria every woman is black, with coarse hair, brown eyes, full lips…and nobody makes the fried chicken jokes. The international media has made it very clear, in many ways, that black is just not good enough, not pretty enough…but that is not my reality; everywhere I turn there are black women (some with perverted shades of whiteness, of course LOL!) living colourful lives. My neighbour does not look like Gwyneth Paltrow, the girl on the street doesn’t remind me of Kim Kardashian (even with a full head of Brazilian weave and a decadent accent, she still looks very Nigerian…and pathetic); so I cannot fully grasp the struggle of being a black woman in a world that finds us very unattractive. Although I get a glimpse of it on international blogs and cable TV, and the rest on the desperate streets of Lagos with women who’d rather be green, red, blue, orange or purple, but not black; I can easily shrug it all off and move on chirpily with life, because every attempt by a black woman to be white is so wretched and sad, it makes being black so grand. But it is a different story for the “Black American” woman who, in most cases, loses a job, a boyfriend, her self-esteem to the "other race", and is left to live and deal with the depravities of drug-dealer husbands and pimps and jailbirds. That is her lot in a world where she is reduced to a piece-of-ass in rap videos, while the rappers fall in love and marry Caucasian women.
