The most old fashioned way to get an upper level horse is by breeding it yourself, training it, competing it through the levels, as was the case with Chestry Oak here. Few riders have the time to do this in 2014, or at least they think they don`t. That`s why I think the rider as jockey mentality is taking over more and more. The glory goes to the current rider who wins the ribbons today, not to those who may have bred, and produced the winner, People say they don`t approve of this, but from the praise heaped on the current jockey, whoever it may be, I think most people don`t think through what a long process it is from planning the mating to fruition years later on the big stage, and how many key steps are involved. Which is another way of saying that consummate horsewomen and horsemen are in short supply. And probably always have been---
