The movie, 12 Years a Slave, was one of the most painful movies - TopicsExpress

The movie, 12 Years a Slave, was one of the most painful movies Ive ever seen. It displays the horrors of slavery in a very historically pure kind of way. It makes no attempt at whitewashing the brutal and vicious atrocities of a racist South as some films have done. The horrors were physical, psychological and indeed spiritual. It is the first film that Ive seen that contrasts the lives of free blacks with those of blacks held in the clutches of slavery. Many of the regional attitudes and characteristics of blacks in the north and south are still bearing the fruit of that past. When I first visited New York City, I was somewhat taken aback but all the while happy to see the candor and freedom of expression that Northern blacks exhibited, compared to blacks in the south. There were times I almost wanted to ask, can or should you be saying that to a policeman or person of authority. Freedom is indeed a precious thing. As I celebrate the heros and heroines of our great military, I am all the while reminded of those who died as slaves building this great nation with no voice and no means of defense. This movie calls on us to ensure that their sacrifice is never forgotten.
