The music and technique surely dazzle us. But the one thing Ill remember most about Earl Scruggs is that gap toothed smile...his grin when playing his music. Its that joy, delight and thrill he shows. Watch here as he steps back and flashes that big ol smile at the end. Its not false pride...its not being smug...its a man who was having the time of his life playing a 5-String banjo. I asked Earl once if he ever thought in those early days that his music and playing would have such a lasting, important impact...he replied...Lord no...I was just trying to feed my family. It was so him. I asked him what he thought about people copying his playing...Well...its flattering and humbling...they even copy my mistakes. William S. Monroe was looking for a sound, he was introduced to that sound in December of 1945 by Jim Shumate...another NC Bluegrass Pioneer. When Earl Eugene Scruggs stepped on stage at The Ryman the world of music changed and a new genre was born. No Earl; No Bluegrass. Know Earl; Know Bluegrass. If you are even a casual Bluegrass Music fan, please listen to this mans music and be sure to teach a youngster about him. Rest in Peace Earl Eugene Scruggs.
