The myth of a self interpreting text is a logical impossibility. I - TopicsExpress

The myth of a self interpreting text is a logical impossibility. I agree the text gives a meaning to itself but not the only meaning. Many of the Bible topics are not unique to the bible alone. Hell (or more accurately hells) is not a bibliocentric phenomenon. It didnt even originate within the text. It exists in every religion in some fashion, be it reincarnation as a rat, or eternal conscious torment. Im certainly not prepared to throw the subject away as so many do flippantly but I am willing to understand that our own Christian mythology regarding it often plagues our ability to read outside the text for more information. On many topics, we owe it to ourselves (and often our sanity) to read the various mythologies and historical accounts from outside sources as well. The removal of fear is often easily accomplished by the introduction of understanding.
