The need to replace the existing St. Pete Pier arose in 2004, when Rick Baker was mayor. He told FOX 13 News the first job was lining up money for the project. That took several years, and was followed by a Pier Task Force appointed in his last year in office. He praised St. Petersburgs current mayor and city council.
