The new commission had its first meeting on Sept. 9th in the courtroom of the Cannon County Courthouse. The first matter of business, Tim Bell addressed the commission on behalf of the Rescue Squad. The Squad is looking to apply for a grant to purchase a new rescue truck to replace a 1988 model that is the current back up unit. No action was taken on this matter and it will be discussed further at the next meeting. Next on the agenda was discussing Thermal Imaging Cameras that were obtained by Faye Morse. Mrs. Morse advised the commission that the Sheriffs Department is in possession of the 3 units. Sheriff Young confirmed his department did indeed have the units. The commission then discussed the outstanding debt of the Mooretown Fire Dept. MVFD purchased 2 air packs in the amount of $7500, and has paid back $2500. The remaining balance of $5000 will be paid back in the amount of $1250 per year over the next 4 years. Next were budget amendments. County General amendments were to cover the Countys commitment to cover insurance for new hires. The amendment passed with Jim Bush and Russell Reed voting no. The amendments to the Solid Waste and Ambulance Service will be discussed in more detail at the next meeting. The Commission unanimously approved 3 resolutions pertaining to grants for the county. The first one was for a grant for the Solid Waste Dept. to apply for a $25,000 grant to purchase a skid steer to replace the tractor at the convenience center. The county will be responsible for 10% of the cost of the equipment. This money will come from the Solid Waste Dept. existing budget. The next resolution was to apply for a grant to replace the oil recycling container at the convenience center. This grant is paid 100% meaning the county is not responsible for any money. The 3rd and final resolution was to approve the policies and procedures for a housing rehabilitation grant that will be applied for. It is also a 100% grant. Under new business Sheriff Young advised the Commission that the jails computer software has had its last update and this has caused some major problems. He has been proactive and has obtained bids for new software that will help bring the Sheriffs Department into the 21st century electronically. No action was taken on this matter at this time. It will be discussed at the next meeting. The next meeting of the commission will be on Saturday October 18 at 1000 am in the courtroom of the Cannon County Courthouse.
