The new government is literally DYSFUNCTIONAL because many of the POLICIES they are trying to pass into law are primarily SYMBOLIC MOVES geared directly to THEIR people - i.e: 1) infamous language law (repealed only due to international scrutiny); 2) re-introducing conscription (only to fight in a civil war that pits the western-Ukrainian ideology against the eastern-Ukrainian ideology); 3) attempting to ban the Communist party for supporting the ethnic-Russian stance in eastern-Ukraine (akin to tearing down the Lenin statues); and 4) slashing pensions and implementing other economic policies that serve to devalue the currency (geared to win them IMF and EU favour and a symbolic partnership with the west) These moves and others are all based on the symbolism of eradicating Ukraine of the policies past. The trouble is, this track of policies alienates a large part (almost 50 percent) of the population. Even though this is the direction they want to go, they cant even agree within the government how to get there. The government itself collapsed due to the pulling out of UDAR and Svoboda from the coalition, forcing Yatsenyuk to resign (but apparently they eventually voted against his resignation, after he made these comments in his resignation speech: The fact is that today you failed to vote for the laws, and I have nothing (with which) to pay wages of policemen, doctors, teachers; nothing to buy a rifle with, nothing to fuel an armored personnel carrier with, Yatsenyuk said to the parliament in his resignation speech. Today you failed to take a decision to fill the gas storages to allow us to live through the winter, to at last free ourselves from dependence on Russian gas. So, the government factions cant function well enough to even put proper policy in place. The opposition Fatherland was forced to splinter into many smaller parties (Yanukovichs ex-party) and they are trying to ban and arrest members of the other opposition group (Communists). So, trying to illegitimately reduce the opposition numbers in order to pass legislation, while slick and quite normal in politics everywhere, doesnt even work in Ukraine because the governing coalition is too steeped in symbolism and not focused enough on policy that will make the country work, bring them out of the dark ages, and put the citizens first. Thats why the country is such a mess and it wont get better. EVER. Simple solution (ONLY solution) : Divide the country. The two major ethnicities are now free to run their SEPARATE countries as they wish, no ethnic cleansing, no civil war. They can work on becoming functional members of the international community. Those minorities in each country can now move to the country which suits them. Why it wont happen soon: stupidity. Okay, thats only part of the answer. ECONOMICS and SYMBOLISM.
