The new installment of Hot Rocks (in Five Points: A Journal of Literature and Art) will be out in a few weeks. The introductory matter is below. Note Gordon Van Ness fine piece on Jim: Hot Rocks: Songs and Verse Cradle them in your hands; feast your eyes; enchant your ears “The On the Road, Howl, and Gasoline street ideologies that were signaling a new type of human existence weren’t there, but how could you expect it to be? 45 records were incapable of it.”—Bob Dylan Hot Rocks explores a new age of verse composition, one that started with blues and jazz, and has continued to evolve since rock and poetry intertwined in the sixties, a revolution-in-verse that’s beginning to be more fully understood. Our goal is to present a wide range of work from the worlds of poetry and song. We believe artists’ personal stories are vital to understanding creativity and why poetry and song are necessary to the human condition. We seek pieces that take chances, and speak from the soul as well as the mind. This installment features rock’ n’ roll photographer Kirk West’s pictures and rollicking reminisce of visiting the Jerry Lee Lewis museum in Natchez, Mississippi (hold on to your camera, Kirk!), Stephen Burt’s compelling recollection of his relationship to indiepop and analysis of Allo Darlin’s song “Tallulah,” and Gordon Van Ness’s insightful essay on his teacher James Dickey and Dickey’s eccentric long poem, The Zodiac.
