The new regulation adopted by the government of Maldives on Sunday - TopicsExpress

The new regulation adopted by the government of Maldives on Sunday (27 April) overturning a 60-year moratorium on the death penalty contravenes the countrys international human rights obligations and compromises the democratic progress achieved by the country over the past few years. Under this new regulation children as young as seven can be sentenced to death in a clear violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). The government must immediately repeal this regulation and abolish capital punishment or, at the very least, reinstate the moratorium on the death penalty.
