The new year is a great time to come up with new goals and resolutions to better your health and life. January is a time for a fresh new start in many aspects of your life, including your diabetes management and overall health. As far as your diabetes goals go, they should be measurable, specific, and realistic. Here is a list of both some annual and daily goals to help improve your health in 2015! Annual Goals: • See your physician 2-4 times a year. • Follow your schedule for checking blood glucose levels. • Take diabetes medications as prescribed. • Know your numbers and keep them in check. (A1C, blood pressure, and cholesterol) • Get a renal function test and microalbumin test each year. • Get moving, any physical activity helps and is a step in the right direction. • Create a well-balanced meal plan with your diabetes educator. • Have a yearly eye exam. • Get a flu shot in the fall. • See your dentist twice a year. • Always be prepared for a low or high blood glucose reaction. Know the warning signs and what to do. Daily Goals: • Check your blood glucose X times a day (depending on what your physician suggests). • Take all your diabetes related medications or insulin. • Examine your feet daily for cuts or sores that aren’t healing. • Brush and floss your teeth. With the new year upon us, look for support from family, friends, or your diabetes educator to help you maintain and achieve these goals that are so important for your overall health!
