The newspaper published 15 years back have turned yellow but the memory of a brave heart born on 23 august 1974 born in delhi who gave his supreme sacrifice and won Vrc cannot fade away so easily. Out of his three brothers he was the extremely responsible and took care of his house even in the absence of his mother..The young boy looked after the household. He used to say it to his mother,Mai ghar pe akela rehta hu but his mother always answered him, Akele ho mujhe pata hain lekin kabhi bhi darna mat.... This values and words of his mother rooted deep inside his heart and mind and he became a brave Army officer whose name is written in golden words in the history of bravery,Captain Haneef Uddin. He was a science graduate from shivaji college and then later he joined Indian Army . He was a good drummer and very fond of photography....... Two years into service commisioned with Army supply corps and on training attachment with rajputana rifles he did it! And as the story of every fighter he had to also departure for his duty to guard his motherland. In may 1999 there was a clash between Indian and pakistani patrols in Kargil,Jammu and Kashmir and when some minor intrusions were discovered...., Brig. P C Katoch, commander, 102 Infantry Brigade, decided to pre- empt any further intrutions by occupying defences along all important mountain features up to chorbat la on the ladakh range and the watershed. Also, the the decision to occupy defences along the turtuk lungpa, a track and nala flowing frm the ladakh range to shyok river past turtuk, prevented further ingress by the enemy and provided us a firm base for launching attacks to evict the intruders. Next 9, mahar deployed a company west of the turtuk lungpa and another company at tyakshi spur with position along the Ramdan Lungpa to further strengthen our defences in the turtuk area. the battalions subsequently attacked and captured point 5220. ladakh scouts occupied supporting positions in this area. Subedar LObzang Chhotoak and Sepoy Tsering Dorje proved to be exceptionally courageous in this operations. At the end of May, 11, RajRif, a battalion that was in the process of leaving after compelting its tenure at the central glacier, was inducted through the Turtuk lungpa to occupy defences on the loc at point 5500 and adjucent areas.T here personnel from 5 Vikas assisted 11 Rajrif. On 6-7 june, an attempt was made to capture pt 5590 by a patrol led by Capt Haneef, an army service crop officer serving on attachment with 11 rajrif. The patrol, moving at a height of 18,500 ft, approached the enemy position but came under heavy fire. Despite grave injuries capt Haneef took up positions and kept on engeging the enemy till the remaining patrol succeded in extablishing a foot hold on the mountain. He succmbed to his injuries there after and our nation once again suffered the greatest loss. In recognition of this gallent young officers determined leadership the new sector occupied during op vijay, south of subsector west (SSW), was named SubSector Haneef(SSH). On June 6 1999 this brave man sacrificed his life for our motherland.... His blood made this soil drenched in debt and made us say again that warriors do come to this earth and live and die the most glorious death........ Salute to his mother Smt Hema Aziz who gave her son to the service of our nation and who said proudly , whoever is fighting for the nation in the border is my Haneef... Tu shaheed hua , na jaane kaise teri maa soyi hogi........ Ek baat to tay hain , tujhe lagne wali goli bhi so baar royi hogi......
