The next great lie... Milk prices could double without farm bill resolution This is based on some mythological set of numbers that even the average 4th grader could prove inaccurate. Even if one were to assume that the Agricultural Act of 1949 had contained the magically arrived at parity price of $39.53 per hundred pounds, simple math proves it all to be wrong. Weight = Density x Volume Milk has a density of 1.03 kg/L 1 gallon is equal to 3.78 liters Weight of 3.78 liters of milk = 1.03 kg/L x 3.78 L, or 3.89 kg 1 kilogram is equal to 2.20 pounds. So the weight of 1 gallon of milk is 3.89 x 2.20, or 8.56 pounds - $39.53 per hundred pounds = $.3953 per pound One 8.56 pound gallon of milk @ $.3953 per pound = $3.38 at parity price BUT WAIT… The law actually states: “The price of whole milk, butterfat, and the products of such commodities, respectively, shall be supported at such level not in excess of 90 per centum nor less than 75 per centum of the parity price therefore as the Secretary determines necessary in order to assure an adequate supply.” So in “plain English” that means that BY LAW milk will be between $2.54 and $3.05. No more, and no less!
