The next time Im stranded by a flood, and have to kill a few - TopicsExpress

The next time Im stranded by a flood, and have to kill a few hours; and decide to do it at a movie theater; I hope something better is playing! But, because we needed something to help us kill a couple of hours (at least the water was down just enough by the time we were done) I decided since Cap was already out of the theaters; Id use the opportunity to go see a comic book film; and Wolverine...er, excuse me, X-Men: Days Of Futile Pastures almost qualifies. As many may know; I have never cared for any of the Wolver-Jackman films that try to pass themselves off as X-Men movies. But, I tried to give this one a fair shot. Although, granted, I wouldnt have bothered (at the theater anyway) if I could have gotten home. This film was better than the others; but, in the same way that having a finger cut off is better than having a whole arm severed! Its entertaining; with a few good performances; but, its still pretty much the same old minimalist take on the X-Men that Bryan Singer has had all along. It just seems older and more tired now. Its pretty easy to top the first three bore fests; (especially X3 - Audience 0) but, it still doesnt make much sense; and is nowhere NEAR worthy of the classic comic book story from which it steals its title! It was one of those films that is fairly entertaining in spots while youre sitting there; and mostly forgotten by the time you get to your car for the ride home. It, like the others in this series; and the Marvel movies churned out by Fox and Sony, is fairly empty when you get right down to it. Another in a long line of Hollywood nonsense with familiar comic book characters who only vaguely resemble their comic book namesakes. I know; how fanboy of me! Even though the films being produced by Marvel, the ones they retain the rights to (2008 to present) are far from perfect; and have had a few misses so far; they are FAR SUPERIOR to the dreary, vacuous messes that Fox and Sony keep slinging! These Wolver, sorry, X films, lack any sense of wonder and excitement. Much like 99.9% of the comics Marvel pukes out now, they are hollow, joyless and at times even nihilistic! Its not that they dont have heroic characters with noble intent (thats Goyer and Nolans shtick!) theyre just devoid of any notable enthusiasm for the subject matter. That doesnt make their films bad, necessarily, but, it usually makes them range from uneven to quite dismal and lifeless. Believe it or not; I didnt hate Days Of Futile Passivity; I just came away fairly cold. I still admit that it was the best of the ones Ive watched. I admit that it was interesting in spots; and surprisingly; enjoyed the Quicksilver bit the most; and thats coming from the worlds NUMBER 1 QUICKSILVER HATER! I HATE THE BASTARD, but, his scenes were quite well done and amusing. There was still a great deal left conveniently unexplained; and that seemed largely due to lazy writing; as with most big budget butt busters these days! (No pun) I guess Ill go into it in more depth on Clobberin Time next week. At least I was able to get home; and it could have been worse: I could have went to see Transformers... NAH! ACTUALLY, I COULDNT/WOULDNT!
