The number of new approaches to treating many different disease conditions through the various types of glial cells will probably be a dominate theme amongst others in medicine for some time. I am always amazed that researchers ignored these types of cells for so long just seeing them as scaffolding and little more. Obviously, part of the deal was that neurons yield themselves to study quite a bit more especially with the types of tools neuroscientist had but equally problematic is the use of metaphors (namely the digital computer model) for how the brain operates and creates the mind that blinded scientists to seeing a more complete picture of things.
