The number of officers on the Greater Manchester Police force is set to fall below the 7,000 mark as the latest round of cuts take effect. Figures show that GMP lost a total of 254 officers in 12 months last year – equivalent to 3.5 per cent of the force In September the total number of officers fell to just 7,069 and it is expected to drop below the 7,000 mark in the coming weeks. Just a few years ago the force had more than 8,200 officers – which was not enough for the late chief constable Mike Todd who called for the then Government to provide him with funding for 11,000 officers. But in the public spending cuts in the wake of the credit crunch, GMP was ordered to find savings worth £134m by 2015. And Chancellor George Osborne ordered another round of cost-cutting last year which means GMP is having to find further savings to its annual budget worth another £39m. Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy will have to shed a further 700 police posts, reducing the force to 6,400 officers by April 2016.
