The number on the speedometer isnt always an indication of how fast youre getting to where youre going. You might, after all, be driving in circles, really quickly. Campbells Law tells us that as soon as a number is used as the measurement for something, someone will get confused and start gaming the number, believing that theyre also improving the underlying metric, when, in actuallity, theyre merely making the number go up. We are also tempted to do this in our spiritual lives when we measure checking off our spiritual to do list rather than our intimacy with God. Busyness in ministry doesnt equal spiritual depth.
