The number one industry in Appalachia is Poverty. Associations receive grants to do studies and create plans to defeat poverty. Cities and Counties receive huge funds to fight poverty. Educational institutes/public schools receive more money to educate the poor because the studies conclude lack of education is the reason their poor. Police, jails, judges, drug treatment programs and the courts all receive money to stop the drug addiction caused by poverty. Roads, economic development money all paid for by tax payer dollars to improve the poverty ranking of Appalachia and site that as the reason they remain poor. Medical facilities (tax exempt) receive money to treat the effects of low income diets, injuries associated with low income wages and drug abuse. Medicaid, food stamps and even the utility companies are paid with federal money to afford the poor not to mention housing allowances and rural development loans. Lawyers represent the poor in their Disability claims or black lung cases. Arts and culture centers are paid for a built to exploit the poor with most productions featuring the life of the poor, the language of the poor to confirm everyone there is really poor. One way or another the majority of people in Appalachia, who arent poor, owe their livelihood to the poor. Appalachia would go broke if not for the poor.
