The number one movie at the weekend box office was “Lone Survivor.” The true story of Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell and his unit’s deadly mission against the Taliban is shaping up to be the first big hit of the year, with a $40 million debut and an A-plus Cinemascore rating from viewers. The film so filled its star, Mark Wahlberg, with admiration for our military that he blasted fellow actors for whining about how hard it is to make movies about combat. It also once again illustrates an irrefutable truth that Hollywood repeatedly profits from, then forgets about what Americans want in a movie. Studios churn out countless left-wing, anti-American TV shows and movies that bomb. But even Variety noted last week that every so often, along will come something like “Lone Survivor” or the recent “Bible” TV miniseries, and it’s a giant hit. And it’s always a “surprise!” Another such movie coming later this month is “Gimme Shelter,” a story about a teenage mother based on true events, with a strong pro-life message. Expect Hollywood to be stunned if that’s a hit, too. Hollywood executives may fly over Middle America, and never come in contact with the millions of conservative, faith-based people who live there. But when they finally make a movie or TV show that doesn’t write off more than half the potential audience, it can be very, very rewarding.
